What is Freemasonry?

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest social and charitable organisations. It is built upon a rich tradition that dates back to medieval stonemasons who crafted some of the world’s most magnificent cathedrals and castles. Today, Freemasonry continues to flourish, guided by four important values: Integrity, Friendship, Respect, and Charity. These principles help define the path of a freemason through life.

Freemasonry prides itself on its inclusive nature. Membership is open to any man over the age of 18, regardless of race, religion, or social status. Furthermore, there are Lady Freemason Lodges that welcome women who wish to be part of this esteemed organisation. The ethos of inclusivity ensures that Freemasonry remains a diverse and welcoming community.

Freemasonry’s origins are believed to lie in the traditional ceremonies of the medieval stonemasons. These skilled craftsmen played a pivotal role in constructing many of the world’s awe-inspiring cathedrals and castles. Over time, the stonemasons’ guilds evolved into modern-day Freemasonry, preserving the rituals and values that define the organisation.

Travel back through the history of Freemasonry, and you will encounter a fascinating journey from the medieval era to the present day. A significant milestone in this journey was the United Grand Lodge of England’s 300th anniversary in 2017. This celebration underscored the enduring legacy of Freemasonry and its continual evolution over centuries.

The three degrees in Freemasonry are symbolic of the stages of personal and spiritual development. They are:

  • Entered Apprentice: This is the first degree, representing the beginning of a freemason’s journey. It focuses on the foundational principles of Freemasonry.
  • Fellowcraft: The second degree delves deeper into the teachings and rituals, encouraging members to expand their knowledge and understanding.
  • Master Mason: The third degree signifies the culmination of the journey, where a freemason attains the highest level of knowledge and wisdom within the lodge.
